sorry I didn't punctuate correctly. so American Football (proper noun) is a different sport, a bit like rugby. Unfortunately American football doesn't have a very large fanbase in comparison. Pretty sure Soccer is an actual word in the American dialect of English but would be considered slang in the overall language.

probably, I think the sport originated when football and rugby weren't as distinct, apparently the first game was played with a round ball so maybe the name just stuck
