In hindsight though, I don't think they'd have been good enough for international competition with their previous roster.

Maybe, but EMEA/NA weren’t very competent yet. NA’s 2nd best team was somehow TSM despite the team having no strategy and relying on a triple duelist comp while Heretics had a literal cheater on their team, cough nieSoW cough
