The format to make franchising work in 2023+

The main issues that seem to be brought up about franchising in 2023 are:

Not enough spots
No pathway for other teams to make it to the top
No pathway for upcoming players to make it to the top

Model each region in the English Premier League format with 3 tiers that promote and relegate between them?
Is this too much of an obvious answer..

That's always the problem with franchising in general though and is kinda unavoidable unless there is a year limit on the entry contract allowing orgs/teams to exit.

The obvious reason as to why this isn't possible is because Riot have already said they would pay teams to enter and they wouldn't want to pay 120 teams (10 teams per tier, 30 teams per region, 4 regions)

That's the current setup Riot are going with. Paying the teams what is reported to be 6 figures to enter franchising next year. It's wild.

It means Riot keeps majority control where the system goes because they are paying for it, instead of the teams having influence when they pay to enter.

i think its not paying directly its a skin partnership like the one in rainbow six , trusted orgs gets skin ingame and each side takes a % , its a win win

Good thing would be that teams don’t keep disbanding, or leaving the scene entirely so it is easier to identify with a team

The LG thing is sadge indeed,
It is a thing in Esports in General that it’s just not as easy to be a fan of a team

That's becoming the norm now in normal sports too. Just look at the NBA, the top players have no loyalty to the team or the city they represent because they can just force their way to the best place they think they can win. People these days are fans of the players and not the team, so they'll just follow their fav player wherever they go.
It's sad. Gone are the days of the Duncan, Parker, Ginobli Spurs... (sorry if you're not an NBA fan)

there are a few problems with relegation / promotion in an esports context

i.e., a team that doesn't comply with riot's sponsor deals etc.

and ofc, a big benefit of having a franchised league is more developer content support in the form of team skins etc which may not be possible if new teams keep coming into the league.

Americas
EMEA
APAC (from Malaysia & Phillipines islands and below including Aus)
Asia (Mainland nations + Japan)

Honestly 3 might be better as Riot plans

i thought asia as a whole was a region instead of splitting it into 2?

However in this case it will prob be APAC south ( basically the apac now )
and APAC North ( korea / japan /china, maybe even hk/tw depending on how it goes )

24 teams play it, iirc

The major event goes like:

RMR > Challengers Stage > Legends Stage > Champions Stage

The America RMR (which we could call a qualifier for the major) features 16 teams, 15 of them coming from open qualifiers, the other 1 (FURIA) is already qualified there because they got into the playoffs last major. You could call this something like the VCT events, but in this case with BR+LATAM+NA.

Since FURIA got into the playoffs (Champions Stage) last event, they secured a spot for the region directly into the Legends stage, the other 5 teams have to go through the Challengers Stage. The Challenger stage is a swiss format with teams from all the regions that did not make into the Legends directly.

After the Challengers stage, 8 teams go into the Legends with the other 8 already qualified by the higher seeds and another swiss format to decide the 8 teams going to the playoffs

Playoffs are single elimination bo3.
