So here's a 6th grade ratio & proportion question.

  • Two vessels A & B contains mixture of milk & water in the ratio of 4:1 & 9:11 respectively. They are mixed in the ratio of 3:2 . Find the ratio of milk & water in the final mixture.

You should try solving it first without any external help but if you weren't able to solve it then you can google it & feel ashamed for not being able to solve a 6th grade problem.

Pls send solution images as well I would like to see how did you guys approch the problem.

Thanks & Regards,

Ratio of milk to water would be 33:17

4+1 = 5
9+11 = 20
So we get 3(4:1) + 2((9:11)/4)
12:3 + 4.5:5.5
16.5:8.5
33:17

Well adding water is quite normal for me to just make it a little thinner but 4:1 & 9:11 are really disgusting amount but then it's maths & you can't ask why john is buying 60 watermelons from the supermarket.

33:17, can't give you image as did it in mind only but this is the rough calculation ig
A:B
3:2
60% : 40%

Final Milk:Water
4/5×60 + 9/20 × 40 : 100- (Milk's)
66:34
33:17

finally the correct solution i would have used as a 6th grade student.

Fyi, there is a correct solution but no correct approach, different people can have different approaches from simpler to complex. I took this approach because it's kind of a common sense to me and easily doable in mind without much calculation. I mean who even gonna remember formula or what grade question is this, as long as it is approachable via simple common sense.

I tend to disagree with "no correct approach". You can get to correct answer only by a correct approach(it varies from simpler to complex but it has be correct). i personaly used rule alligation here at first & i thought how this ques is a part of 6th grade because now i tend to find the answer with using much more complex approach in comparison to my approach in lower classes but when i tried thinking as a 6th grade student i used the exact same approach like you. In both the cases, the approach was correct but mine was complex while your's was simpler one.

You understood my point but somehow forced yourself to confuse yourself unnecessarily, what I meant by "Correct Approach" is that there is no single definitive approach like a "Correct Solution" but rather a pool of Infinite Approaches to get that "Correct Solution".
And I'm pretty sure, In school time, That problem wouldn't have taken more than 2 steps to solve because everything was formula back then but as you grow up and get past the formula/hard and fast rules, you become more capable of solving a simple problem with simpler approach as it becomes more interpretable and that's why it is better according to Occam's Razor in contrast to Complex approach.
