Hello vlr. From personal experience, I can guarantee that visiting zoos not only help cleanse your mind of stress, but also creates a positive memory to remember.
Therefore, here are the top European zoos I’ve visited.

  1. Mulhouse Parc Zoologique et Botanique
  2. ZooParc de Beauval
  3. Zoo Praha
  4. Zoo Zurich
  5. Parc Zoologique de Paris
  6. Tierpark Hellabrunn (Munich)
  7. Zoo Berlin
  8. Tiergarten Schoenbrunn (Vienna)
  9. Zoo Basel
  10. Wroclaw Zoo

Having read reremus’ new thread about negativity on social media, I would like to bump this thread to remind you that it is possible to see exotic/exciting nature up close in zoos

I need to visit more outside Europe (I’ve visited 3) to make a good list

Yeah this list is only applicable to Europe but I’m sure there are plenty of opportunities close to you to experience nature you would otherwise fail to encounter (such as a panda bear or assassin beetle)

Zoo Zurich clears ngl

It’s an awesome place and definitely clears the vast majority of zoos on and below its latitude.

Man I so want to visit 🇮🇩 I have so many friends either from there or lived there at one point in their lives. Maybe in the future.

How are conditions in European zoos? Are they primarily for research, refuge and education? Do they give them monkeys bananas? I must know.

Most are for the active conservation of vulnerable species and the level of education provided by the zoos are usually very high. From gestation period to sources of threats in the wild, information about different species are varied, abundant, and usually displayed in multiple languages (usually English + local language).
The zoos I rate highly have exceptional facilities with large enclosures and a good layout/map. These aspects come together to provide the visitor with a pleasant experience and the animals with plenty of space to roam.

TLDR: conditions are very acceptable (as far as I know) but as my family dislikes the primate exhibits I am unsure about the bananas question.

You should check out Pairi Daiza Zoo. The design of the walkways and enclosures are incredible. The only thing subpar is the food, but it's still okay.

outside of going to zoos/exhibits, i usually encounter some midly interesting animals such as monitor lizards, various type of snakes (land and sea ones), boars, monkeys, many kind of avians (owls, eagles, and colorful birds which i can't really name), and frogs/toads. for the pretty interesting ones, i would say elephants and a sumatran tiger (thankfully it didn't come after anyone). anyways, if you're wondering how i meet these various kinds of creatures is because i lived in a complex which was built within a forest so wildlifes aren't that unexpected. sorry for the long tanget geo

Just got past customs, but that sounds so 🆒! I usually encounter nutria (flattened and not flattened), hedgehogs, small frogs/toads, and various invasive species (mostly birds and insects) introduced from Asia. Dw about the tangent, I like the passion you put into it 😗

Thank you. I rarely find time to go so north but if I do I’ll make sure to give it a visit.
