to be fair, she was born in London. not everyone learns to speak their ancestors’ language fluently (assuming she even has living relatives who grew up in China)

Not really ancestors. Yinsu is 2nd generation Chinese, and I believe most 2nd generation immigrants speak their parent’s language fluently.
