You'll ofc reinvest it somewhere else which is likely going to have better growth than gold

It's clearly not, nobody with wealth puts it in gold

Why would you ever put it in gold over a index fund that has better returns and is less volatile?

The U.S. dollar was once backed by 1.50 grams of gold held in the Federal Reserve the gold standard was the basis for the international monetary system, it is highly liquid and can be converted to cash in almost any currency with relative ease. I would rather invest in something that has a history in proving to be valuable than something that has been built on a house of cards for the past 40+ years and with $32 trillion in debt and counting and Saudi Arabia now accepting Yuan instead of the dollar for Chinese oil sales, how much longer will the U.S. dollar be the World's Reserve Currency?
